| Arguably the most spectacular of all Polynesian performances, the Samoan fire knife (or also known as the "Tooth of Death") has mesmerized both young and old for generations. The weapon from ancient origins, a 37 inch staff with a 14 inch metal blade on one end is an actual weapon of the "Nifo Oti." The blade and the shaft's end are both wrapped in a flammable wick. When ignited, beautiful flames soar from both ends, and in the hands of a skilled warrior, the fire knife is twirled at such an amazing speed, all that can be seen is a circle of dancing flame.
Since 1992, the Polynesian Cultural Center has been honored to host the World Fire Knife Championship. This is an absolute must see to anyone who happens to be on Oahu during the third week of May. The best in the world congregate to put on a performance which rivals that of the Chinese.
An idea on some of the rules and regulation these contestants must abide by. Each contestant must have three dancing knives to preform in the competition. All knives must be made of metal (nothing to fake here) and they must have one single blade knife and two double blades.
This prestigious event is open to the public, and for those who want to cut to the chase, the top three contestants will be performing and judged during the intermission of the evening show.
If you have ever wanted to be in the presence of royalty, now would be the time. One of the traditional attendees of this event includes the Chief of Samoa and his family. The winner will be announced during a special ceremony at the end of the show.
